Johnny Ryan’s utterly unpretentious taboo-tackling is an infectious and hilarious bombardment of political incorrectness, taking full advantage of the medium’s absurdist potential for maximum laughs. In an age when the medium is growing up and aspiring to more mature and hoity-toity literary heights, Ryan builds on the visceral tradition that cartooning has had on our collective funny bone for over a century. Johnny was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in shitty Plymouth, just a mile away from the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant. He now lives in Los Angeles with his wife.
“Johnny Ryan is the funniest cartoonist working today.” – Peter Bagge
“I think his comics are a riot! Highly recommended.” – Daniel Clowes
“Generally speaking, [Johnny Ryan's] comics are really dumb & infantile, and prove beyond a doubt that chemical pollution, television, video games, pop music, etc. is making us all stupider by the minute…” – R. Crumb
“In terms of sheer, unstoppable, soul-shaking laughter, Johnny Ryan may well be the funniest cartoonist working alternative comics today.” – The Daily Cross Hatch
“Remember that kid in school? The one with the pen sketchings on the back of his Trapper Keeper full of wicked violence and jagged lines? Ever wonder what happened to him? Well, he’s Johnny Ryan and he’s all grown up and making some of the most in your face comics today. PRISON PIT is something you have to experience to believe. An artistic achievement in storytelling (most of the pages are wordless) on a pure guttural and simplistic level. Highly recommended for those of you who like a bit of dirt and grit with your comics.” – Ain’t It Cool News
